About Our Council

Blessed Sacrament Council 11947 was founded in 1997 through the efforts of many people, including Father John Cregan and Charter Grand Knight James Bertine.  Since that time, the Council has grown to over 100 members among the 23,000 Virginia Knights.

Knights in Review:

  • In the past 5 years (2006-2010) the Council has donated $20,000 to scholarships and $30,000 to charities including KOVAR.  In 2010 (July 2009-July 2010) the Council donated $8500 to KOVAR and $3000 to 4 rising high school students Catholic scholarship fund.  For the Financial Year 2009 (July 2008-July 2009) the Knights of Columbus Council gave $16000 to charities including $4500 to rising high school students Catholic scholarship fund.

  • On 5 January 2009 (July 2007 - July 2008) the Financial Secretary reported that in 2008 the Blessed Sacrament Council received $18500 in gross receipts and gave out $14900 to charities (the remaining amounts were placed in savings or to recoup direct costs for food) - that is an 81% payout.  Our council also estimated that 5800 volunteer hours were performed by Blessed Sacrament Knights.  Additionally the District Deputy awarded PGK Michael Farrell with the Star Council award for an outstanding 2007-08. PGK John Boyd also announced that there was a $1000 donation to the 2009 KOVAR fund – or Knights of Virginia for intellectually disabled.

  • In an October 2008 Statement on Financial Service Markets and  the Knights of Columbus, the Supreme Knight  reported that the KofC maintained its AAA status and a liquidity ratio of 246% composed largely of high-quality investment bonds. "As a result, our financial condition remains extremely strong, and you can be certain that you are fully protected by one of the strongest and most reliable insurance programs in the world."

  • In February of 2009 the Council vote to engage all Council Knights in prayer and sacrifice on all Tuesdays to promote the culture of life and prevent abortions. Fasting is one important sacrifice mentioned. From now on, Tuesdays are special for us at Blessed Sacrament.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Usher at the Basilica

"The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception stands in northeast Washington as a monument to the faith of American Catholics. It reflects visibly, pastorally and spiritually the presence of the Knights of Columbus. The great bell tower, the 329-foot Knights’ Tower, was completed in 1959. This gift from the Knights of Columbus proclaims the Order’s undying devotion to the Mother of God and our Mother while, at the same time, making a quiet statement about the Order’s presence in the U.S. capitol." - From the KofC Supreme Council Website
